A variety of different production features have benefited the Lego company throughout its existence. Lego has been able to design some of the most well-known toys on the planet thanks to these features. This includes the development of an exclusive interlocking mechanism and the use plastic instead of other materials. These unique features have enabled the company become the top toy manufacturer in the world.
The 1960s saw the company continue to grow rapidly. One of the major changes occurred when Godtfred Kirk Christiansens’s cousin, Dagny Holm joined the company as a modelbuilder. Dagny was adept at creating large-scale models and worlds that were exhibited in the showroom. This was a great way to advertise the possibilities of the LEGO bricks and to generate interest among children.
In 1971, the LEGO system began expanding into new areas with the addition of furniture pieces and dollhouses. In 1972, the program was further expanded with the addition of ships and boat sets, which included floating hull pieces. The 1960s also saw the company start its international expansion, with sales in North America through a licensing agreement with Samsonite.
In the 1980s and 1990s the company continued to expand, diversify, and modernize. This included the creation of a research and development department which has worked to keep the LEGO system on top of its game in terms of innovations. The introduction of themed sets enabled users to build specific models, without having to figure it out on their own. This was the first step towards building more complex models, and it allowed children to have a more hands-on experience with Legos.
